Funding Announcement Press Release: Template and Timing
Key takeaway

Funding announcement press release guide: a template, the timing from embargo to wire, two real headline examples and what to leave out of the first pitch.

A funding announcement press release should lead with the company, the amount and the lead investor in one sentence, explain what the money will build, include a founder quote and an investor quote, and go out on a planned timeline. Pitch an exclusive or an embargo at least 48 hours ahead, then publish the release at the agreed lift time.

This piece gives a template, a timeline and two real headline examples. It argues that the release is the smallest part of a funding announcement. The pitch email sells the story, and the release gives the reporter the facts to write it.

What goes in a funding announcement press release?

A funding announcement press release has eight parts, and the first two paragraphs carry most of the weight. A reporter will read the headline and lead and decide whether to continue.

  • A headline that names the company, the amount, the round and the purpose.

  • A subheadline that adds the one fact a reporter cares about next, such as the market or the product.

  • A dateline and a lead paragraph that states who raised what, from whom, and what for.

  • A second paragraph on the problem the company solves and the size of the market.

  • A founder quote that says something specific about the product or the customers.

  • An investor quote that explains why the investor backed this company now.

  • A short paragraph on how the money will be used, with a hiring, product or market detail.

  • A boilerplate about the company and a named contact with a phone number.

Add a customer quote if you have one. Reporters tend to value a customer who names a result, because an investor's praise is expected and a customer's is not.

What does a funding announcement press release template look like?

A funding announcement template fills the eight parts above with blanks for the facts. Words in capitals are blanks to fill in before sending.

What do real funding announcement headlines look like?

Real funding headlines put the company, the amount and the purpose in the first line. Two February 2026 releases show the pattern.

On February 17, 2026, a PR Newswire release carried the headline "Dataro Raises $14.28M Series A to Power AI-Native Fundraising for Charities." The first paragraph, as reproduced by Techdash, says the company announced a $14.28 million Series A round led by Blueprint Equity, with the money supporting growth in the United States.

On February 11, 2026, GlobeNewswire carried "Voxira AI Agent Developer Secai Raises $6.2M Series A to Scale Healthcare Automation," with a subheadline that names the use: voice AI and clinical documentation across North America. Secai's GlobeNewswire announcement opens by saying Montreal-based Secai announced the closing of a $6.2 million Series A round.

Both headlines follow the same rule: name, amount, round, purpose. The difference is the second line. Secai uses a subheadline to add the use case, and Dataro puts the purpose in the headline itself.

When should you announce, and in what order?

You should announce in a fixed order: exclusive or embargoed pitch first, wire release at the lift time, social and follow-ups after. Lead time is the part teams cut, and it is the part reporters need most.

  • Two to three weeks out: write the narrative, confirm the numbers and get investor sign-off on quotes.

  • One week out: pitch an exclusive to one reporter, or ask a short list whether they accept an embargo.

  • At least 48 hours out: send the full materials to every reporter who agreed, with the lift date and time in a named time zone.

  • Lift time: publish the press release, the company post and the social posts together.

  • One to three days after: send follow-up notes to reporters who missed it, with one new fact.

The 48-hour figure comes from advice published by Techpoint, which recommends pre-pitching under embargo at least 48 hours before the official announcement so contacts have time to interview executives and write. You can read it in Techpoint's guide to announcing a funding round. Treat 48 hours as the minimum and aim for three to five days for a larger round.

Should you offer an exclusive or an embargo?

Offer an exclusive when you want one outlet to write a larger story, and offer an embargo when you want wider coverage on the same day. The two can work together: the exclusive runs first, and the embargo lifts for everyone else once it does.

The Canaan venture firm's guide to getting press for a seed or Series A round advises giving the story to one reporter and telling them they are the only one, which it calls an exclusive. Its advice is in Canaan's press guide for early rounds. The mechanics of an embargo, including the written agreement and the lift time, are covered in the PR embargo guide and the embargo timing guide.

What should you leave out of the first pitch email?

Leave the dollar amount and the investor names out of the first pitch, and include enough to make the reporter ask for more. Techpoint's advice is to give editors enough to be interested but not enough to write the whole story without the release.

The first email should name the company, the category and the angle, such as the problem, the customer or the growth, and ask whether the reporter will take the news under embargo. The full release goes out after a written yes.

How do you get more than one story from a funding round?

You get more than one story by planning a second and third angle before the first one runs. A funding release is one story, and a reporter who already covered it will not run it again.

Prepare two follow-ups: a customer or product story for the following week and a founder or market story for the week after. Funding news that includes a verifiable milestone gets cited more often, which is the pattern in twenty fintech PR campaigns. A short case study of the result, written to the standard in Virgo's guide to what a useful tech PR case study must include, gives reporters a reason to return.

Have counsel review the release before any reporter sees it, especially if the round is still open. Public statements about a fundraising can raise securities-law questions, and investors usually have approval rights over how they are named and quoted.

Confirm three things in writing: that the round has closed or that counsel has approved announcing it, that every named investor has approved their quote, and that each number in the release can be supported. This article does not give legal advice, and a lawyer should make the call.

What mistakes weaken a funding announcement?

  • The headline leaves out the amount, the round or the purpose

  • The release goes to every reporter at once, with no exclusive or embargo

  • The quotes are generic praise and carry no specific fact

  • The use of funds is a list of buzzwords with no hiring, product or market detail

  • No follow-up angle is ready for the second week

  • The lift time has no time zone

Teams that want help planning a larger announcement can find the approach on the public relations services page, or contact Virgo PR.

The bottom line

Write the one-sentence lead first, send the no-numbers pitch to one reporter at least 48 hours before the lift, and hold the wire release until that story is live. Everything else in the plan follows from those three steps.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a funding announcement press release be?

A funding announcement press release should run 400 to 600 words, with the key facts in the first two paragraphs. A longer release rarely adds anything a reporter needs.

When is the best time to announce a funding round?

The best time is a weekday morning when the news is not competing with a larger story. Pick a date that gives reporters at least 48 hours with the material and confirm the time zone.

Do you need a press release for a funding round?

Yes, you need one, because it gives reporters the facts, quotes and contacts in one place. The pitch email sells the story, and the release supports the reporter once they say yes.

Should you name the valuation?

Name the valuation only if the company and the investors agree and the number will help the story. Many releases leave it out, and reporters can ask for it.
